This is Murakami compact.
Set during one night it is the story of Mari who is awake and doesn't want to sleep, and her beautiful sister Eri, who is asleep day and night.
Night time is a different place - a different undersea world where the people who live by night are different of course then those who live by day.
Mari spends her night being interrupted - by a musician she knew from school and the manager of a Love Hotel who needs Mari's help with a client.
As with all Murakami he takes you through a calm, dream-like world where reality and fantasy blur into the surreal - but it still feels real - possible.
It's left very open ended but then it would be difficult to tie something up in one night only.
After Dark is a glimpse into this world and will leave you to your imagination.
